STUART — June 5, 2009. After a year of construction, Sunset Bay Marina and Anchorage will display its new grounds to area boaters with a grand opening Friday evening.

The 5 p.m. event gave the Treasure Coast boating crowd a chance to tour the facility just south of Roosevelt Bridge with food, drink and light jazz music.

“We’ve really been looking forward to this,” said Pamela Alexander, 41, who will operate the marina with her husband Jay. “I’ve pretty much spent my life on the water, and what a great opportunity this is to get involved in the community and have a place for our kids to grow up.”

On the former Southpoint Anchorage property, Sunset Bay has been under construction since last May to add marina elements and a revamped harbor master’s building.

The 1.9-acre site on the St. Lucie River features a 69-buoy mooring field, 128 boat slips, 135 parking spaces, 910 feet of free public dock space and 3,000 feet of transient dock space for guests staying from one night to a month.

Sunset Bay’s substantial breakwater will allow for calm waters inside the marina, and also has both fixed and floating docks.

The 2,300-square-foot addition to the harbor master’s building includes amenities such as laundry facilities, showers and an upstairs common room with television and free wireless Internet access.

Salty’s Ship Store will offer drinks, snacks, books and boating accessories.

The Friday event will be the first of two grand openings, Alexander said. The second is scheduled for sometime this fall when the Sailor’s Return, the facility’s 220-seat restaurant, opens its doors.

Alexander, of Palm City, said she hopes to host fishing tournaments and monthly “sunset festivities” on the adjacent river walk. Most of all, she’s excited to become a prominent player in the Treasure Coast boating community.

“We love meeting the people that come in,” Alexander said. “The boating crowd is a great group of people, and to be near them while working is a real treat.”
